When a person spreads false rumors saying my marriage is in trouble, is that grounds for slander?

Slander is the speaking of false words that cast a person into disrepute.

For example, I might say that another attorney is no more learned in law than hexeliebe. If that other attorney is as incompetent as hexeliebe (whom I actually believe is NOT an attorney) then it's not slander, 'cos it's true. But if the words cast a person in disrepute, then it is slanderous. It would certainly be defamatory to suggest that any lawyer is as bad a lawyer as hexeliebe.

However, it might not be slander per se. Slander per quod is a little harder, but if you can show actual damages, then you have a case. Speak to a neighborhood contingent fee lawyer; talk to several, if need be: you should not need to come out of pocket to get such a case started, though you might have to kick the court reporter's fee if you need to take a deposition of the defendant or a witness. When a person spreads false rumors saying my marriage is in trouble, is that grounds for slander?
I have always been told ';rumors start somewhere';When a person spreads false rumors saying my marriage is in trouble, is that grounds for slander?
It is not slander or defammation of character if the person saying the things believes them to be true.
only if the rumors are false and the person doing it has malicious intent - both can be hard to prove.
nope. Not unless you want to waste about $5,000 and a year of your life looking like a fool for bringing the facts in your marriage to a public court.

AS ALWAYS, cybershark likes to talk in circles and attack others. So let's get to the facts.

As stated, you can show no damages. Regardless, even if you felt it necessary to file a civil suit for slander, even slander per se would require a finding that you suffered damages of some sort, be it reputation, social standing and the such.

Since you are not a celebrity or public person, you would then have to prove you have such standing.

Next you would need to show that the allegations of 'marriage is in trouble' are false. That will require at a minimum that you open your marriage to public scrutiny. If you are not willing to do that then you stand no chance.

and last saying your 'marriage is in trouble' is opinion. Your burden at trial will be to prove that an opinion has harmed you in a way that is monitarily compensible.

I'll give you a hint. The easy way to discern an attorney from a non-attorney is that most competent attorneys won't automatically tell you to sue because we know what makes a good case and what doesn't.

An idiot will spew ';Sue the Bastards'; without caring the cost to you.
You must have economical damages to sue for slander. Otherwise, it is just a fuddle suit.
Only you know the truth, people say a lot of things through anger or jealousy or because there boring ignore rumors its all sticks and stones. Just start your own rumor about them that would teach them from being a little gossip monger.
It is certainly grounds for divorce. Divorcing the so called 'friend' that is.

Ignore them. Time will show them up to be wrong. Then it will be them who will look bad from thier rumor mongering.

He who laughs last....
